M-14/I-96 Reconstruction Project
Sheldon Road to Newburgh Road
The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is reconstructing M-14/I-96 between Sheldon Rd and Newburgh Rd in Plymouth Township and the City of Livonia.
Project Work
Over the past few years, MDOT has invested nearly $2.5 million in non-routine maintenance and emergency repairs to the roadway in the project area, not including annual cold patch placement and emergency bridge repairs that have continued to increase in frequency.

NB I-275 CLOSING at Ann Arbor Rd Advisory
Utility work requires crossing I-275 and a closure on the NB side, south of M-14/I-96, on Saturday.
Saturday, 6/13/26 from 7am-9am:
- NB/SB I-275 at Ann Arbor Rd CLOSING in intermittent 15-minute stoppages.
Construction locations can be found at Michigan.gov/drive. PLEASE DRIVE SLOWLY AND SAFELY THROUGH WORK ZONES.
WB I-96/M-14 at I-275 Advisory
Emergency road repair is needed on WB I-96/M-14 at I-275 and requires CLOSING that area on Friday.
Friday, 6/5/26 from 9am-3pm:
- WB I-96/M-14 will be CLOSED from I-275 to Beck Rd.
Traffic will be detoured to NB I-275 to WB I-96/696 to SB US-23 to M-14. Local traffic can re-enter WB M-14 at Beck Rd.
Check Michigan.gov/drive for construction locations. PLEASE DRIVE SAFELY AND SLOWLY THROUGH OUR WORK ZONES.
M-14/I-96 Project Advisory
An update to the M-14/I-96 project with the latest lane/ramp closures between I-275 and Newburgh Road for temporary lane/ramp reconfigurations during this next phase of construction.
12pm Tuesday 5/12 – August 2026:
· WB Schoolcraft (I-96 Service Dr) will have 1 LANE OPEN from Newburgh Rd to the WB I-96 on-ramp, which remains closed.
7am-7pm Saturday 5/16/26 (possibly into Sunday, depending on weather):
· NB I-275 will have 1 LANE OPEN, M-14/I-96 to 5 Mile Rd.
· WB I-96 will have 1 LANE OPEN, Newburgh to I-275.
· WB I-96 ramp to NB I-275 CLOSED.
· WB I-96 ramp TO SB I-275 CLOSED.
· EB M-14 ramp to NB I-275 CLOSED.
Once above work is completed, these lane/ramp reconfigurations will remain thru early August.
· WB I-96 ramp to SB I-275 remains CLOSED.
· WB I-96, Wayne to Newburgh, 2 LANES OPEN.
· WB I-96 at Newburgh will have a split:
o WB I-96 left lane becomes ramp to NB I-275
o WB I-96 right lane is thru lane for WB I-96/M-14

WB I-96/M-14 at I-275 Advisory
The M-14/I-96 project is shifting westbound M-14/I-96 traffic over to the eastbound side this Saturday, March 21, 9am-5pm, depending on weather conditions.
After 5pm, the following will be in place:
- WB I-96 traffic near Newburgh Road, reduced to 1 lane, will be shifted onto the EB side of M14/I-96, just west of I-275, to Beck Road with 2 EB/WB LANES OPEN thru late 2026.
- WB access to the WB ramp to Sheldon Road will be CLOSED thru late 2026.
- WB access to SB I-275 remains open until late April, when it will close thru late July.
Reminder:
- NB I-275 ramp to WB M-14/I-96 closed and detoured thru late 2026.
Detour – Continue further north on NB 275 to WB I-96/I-696 to SB US-23 to M-14.
- SB I-275 ramp to WB M-14/I-96 closed and detoured thru late 2026.
Detour – Continue further south on SB I-275 to WB I-94 to NB US-23 to M-14.
WB I-96/M-14 at I-275 Advisory
Emergency lane and ramp closures are currently being set up at WB I-96/M-14 at the I-275 interchange due to the poor conditions of the roads:
- WB I-96/M-14 from I-275 to Sheldon Road will be reduced to 1 LANE.
- SB I-275 ramp to WB M-14 will be CLOSED
These areas would have been closed within the next few weeks/months for reconstruction but the recent extreme weather changes have caused major deterioration of the roads and they must be closed, as soon as possible, around noon time today.
The detour for the SB I-275 ramp closure to WB M-14 is to continue further south to WB I-94 to NB US-23 to M-14.
WB I-96/M-14 at I-275 Advisory
LIVONIA, Mich. – The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is returning to rebuild the westbound side of M-14/I-96 from Sheldon Road to Newburgh Road, along with numerous interchange ramps, in the city of Livonia and Plymouth Township, Wayne County. Shoulder clearing work has already begun, with all of this year’s work expected to be finished at the end of the year (restoration work is planned for 2027). During construction, traffic will be shifted onto the newly built eastbound side of M-14/I-96 with two lanes open in each direction.
All work is weather-dependent and includes:
- Rebuilding westbound M-14/I-96 from Sheldon Road to Newburgh Road.
- Rebuilding the following ramps:
- The Newburgh Road entrance ramp to westbound I-96.
- The westbound I-96 ramps to northbound and southbound I-275.
- The northbound and southbound I-275 ramps to westbound M-14.
- The westbound M-14 exit and entrance ramps at Sheldon Road (Exit 20).
- Installing center median/barrier wall with new lighting.
- Rebuilding the I-275 Metro Trail from south of Five Mile Road to Hines Drive.
Continuing through Monday, March 2
- Westbound M-14/I-96 will have one lane closed from I-275 to Sheldon Road for shoulder clearing.
9 a.m. Tuesday, March 3 – Monday, March 9
- Eastbound and westbound M-14/I-96 will have at least one lane open between Sheldon Road and Newburgh Road, along with intermittent I-275 ramp closures, for barrier wall installation.
9 a.m. Tuesday, March 3 – mid-July
- The Newburgh Road entrance ramp to westbound M-14/I-96 will be closed.
9 a.m. Tuesday, March 3 – late 2026
- The northbound I-275 ramp to westbound M-14/I-96 will be closed.
- Westbound M-14/I-96 Exit 20 to Sheldon Road will be closed. (Southbound I-275 traffic merging onto westbound M-14/I-96 will still have access to Sheldon Road Exit 20 until the southbound I-275 ramp to westbound M-14/I-96 is closed in June.)
9 a.m. Monday, March 9 – mid-July
- Eastbound M-14/I-96 will have two lanes open from Sheldon Road to Newburgh Road.
- Westbound M-14/I-96 will have up to two lanes open from Newburgh Road to Sheldon Road.
Mid-April – July
- The westbound M-14/I-96 ramp to southbound I-275 will be closed.
June – late 2026
- The southbound I-275 ramp to westbound M-14/I-96 will be closed.
July – late fall
- The I-275 Metro Trail will be closed from south of Five Mile Road to Hines Drive.
- M-14/I-96 will have two lanes open in each direction between Sheldon Road and I-275.
- M-14/I-96 will have all lanes open in each direction between I-275 and Newburgh Road.
